Description
"In Africaville, Jeffrey Colvin chronicles three generations of one family rooted in a historic Nova Scotia. Established in the late eighteenth century by former slaves, the small community of Africaville lies on a rocky bluff just north of Halifax. Its settlers hail from Haiti, Trinidad, and the American South, and include Jamaican rebels exiled by their British masters. By the turn of the century, Africaville is a vibrant, hardscrabble community home to hardworking families like the Sebolts and their daughter Kath Ella. In 1918, a terrible fever spreads through the settlement, and Kath Ella barely survives. Smart and ambitious, she becomes the first girl from her town to be admitted to college. But her dreams are nearly derailed when she becomes pregnant. Years later, living in Montreal and married to a white man, Kath's fierce love for her son, Omar -- renamed Etienne by his adoptive father -- cannot protect him from racial prejudice. As he grows into adulthood, he refutes his past and breaks from the family, threatening to upend all that his forbears have built. In later years, opportunity pulls Etienne's son, Warner, further away from the family's roots in Africaville and from his identity as the progeny of former slaves. Yet he and successive generations carry a piece of this indelible place with them as they make their way to Montreal, New England, and the deep South."--,Provided by publisher.
